In Austria!

Arrived this morning in London and then went on to Vienna and then to
rural Austria, (via rental car–ah, but it’s been a long time since
I’ve driven a stick!), where I am presently enjoying the view (hills,
vineyards, the Wachau Valley), but not the weather, which is cold and
rainy. Sorta like New York. . . .

A few interesting tidbits from the (full) plane: a couple traveling
together refused to sit near some children, so there was a big to-do
about who was going to sit where. Energetic conversation continued while
the plane was pushing back. Finally the flight attendant said, Look,
we’re going to London, so SIT DOWN!

Also, it was the first time I have ever seen a double-bass taking up
its own seat. A member of the ground crew actually came on and strapped
it in. Hilarious. Pop (my grandfather, the double-bass player) lives!

I am now in Krems, at a super hotel with all kinds of spa amenities
and 2 pools and excellent food (and a library, with a fireplace). This
is a famous wine region, as I am slowly–and happily–discovering.

Now if I can just figure out how to upload some photos, you can soon see what it looks like.
