One day in London

. . . in 1933, Patrick Leigh Fermor woke up and decided to walk to Constantinople.

He writes about this epic journey in A Time of Gifts (which is followed by Between the Woods and the Water). So far, it’s one of the best travel books I’ve ever read, and some of you will know that I’ve read plenty of them.

Highly recommended. I’m only sorry I can’t follow in his footsteps,
since Constantinople doesn’t exist anymore. Same reason I’m not sailing
to Byzantium 😉
